University of Leicester

Introducing APOLLO consortium member - UoL - The University of Leicester.

UoL is a leading public research university located in Leicester, England. Uniquely, it is the only university in Europe founded by its community as a living memorial to those who made sacrifices in the First World War.

Founded in 1921, it has a rich history of academic excellence and a strong commitment to research, teaching, and innovation. The university is renowned for its research in fields such as space science, genetics, and archaeology, including the discovery of the remains of King Richard III.

With a diverse student body and a global outlook, the UoL offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs across various disciplines, fostering an inclusive and dynamic learning environment. The institution is dedicated to making a positive impact on society through its research, community engagement, and commitment to sustainability.

In the APOLLO project, UoL leads the innovative approach of using ultrasonic-enhanced Deep Eutectic Solvents (DES) for material separation through sonification. UoL, known internationally for its expertise in electrochemical surface science and materials research, applies this method to efficiently fragment and separate components of photovoltaic (PV) waste. UOL leads Work Package 2 (Material Separation and Assessment) and Work Package 3 (Optimized Sonification and Assessment), delivering key project outcomes such as PV waste fragmentation, TCM separation processes, and an integrated pilot for TCM recovery.
